A preposterous suggestion, given how adamant he was that all calories are exactly the same just moments earlier. Yet, reading a little further, when presented with evidence that an increased caloric intake of red wine didn’t result in the expected weight gain, he writes: ‘‘It’s almost as if the calories from the alcohol didn’t count’’. At one point, he makes a particular emphasis on a calorie having the same effect on the body whether it be carbs, fat, protein or presumably even fairy dust. Matthews’ weight loss strategy of choice is the calorie counting method, which science has proven to be inefficient and misunderstood. And when the advice finally does appear, it is riddled with inconsistencies.
BIGGER LEANER STRONGER BOOK REVIEW HOW TO
There are chapters based on fitness myths, discipline and willpower, but even over three hours into the book, I was still none the wiser about how to become bigger, leaner or stronger. Getting into the more substantial parts of the book, it is still difficult to find any useful and applicable information. If someone is reading and applying the book’s instructions and still struggles to see results, Matthews is effectively implying that it must then be their fault, given the hundreds of people that have benefitted. The only possible explanation I can find for the purpose of this section in the book, is to absolve Matthews of any guilt or responsibility in the event of failure. But the entire first part of Bigger Leaner Stronger is just that, with pages and pages of statements starting with ‘This book will…’ and littered with masses of pictures and stories of guys who have transformed their bodies using the content provided in the upcoming chapters. Thinking logically, there’s very little reason for this, both from a business or personal point of view.
It is always suspicious when someone continues to sell a product even after its purchase.
Supreme intellect and a masterful control of language aren’t requisite, by any stretch of the imagination. But having read Bigger, Leaner, Stronger, it’s become clear that anyone can be a best-selling writer. To be able to use words to pull together content in a compelling manner, and keep the audience engaged throughout has always been something I’ve admired and longed to have the skills to do myself. On a personal level, I’ve always held writers in the highest regard. As it turns out, the only fool in this equation is the author, Mike Matthews. Hailed as the only book anyone will ever need to understand men’s health and fitness, you’d have to be a fool to let this opportunity pass you by.
